about us

Katie Vasicek, MA
I am a parent coach, consultant and educator focused on helping parents, teachers, and administrators improve their understanding of child development, enhance adult-child relationships, and provide a thoughtful unhurried atmosphere where children can thrive. Working from a philosophy which combines a developmental attachment approach with concepts of “slow parenting”, I provide both education and practical advice that support overall child development and behavior. My passion is providing my clients with support, information and tools to help them create conscious, connected and balanced family lives and school experiences.
As a parent, I faced unexpected personal challenges when my children were young; uncertainty about how to manage stressful situations was the catalyst for seeking out new parenting options with my own children. Fortunately, I was introduced to the work of developmental psychologist, Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D. and became so excited about his methodology that I decided to study it professionally, as well as implement the approach at home. What emerged was a relationship-based practice focused on connection and simplicity. The experience of teaching other professionals and parents, in addition to seeing the benefits with my own children has generated a terrific enthusiasm for sharing this approach. This way of parenting is more proactive and developmentally informed rather than a conventional and reactive approach, which is frequently a parent default.
After earning a BA in Child Development and an MA in Education, I had the opportunity to work in various capacities in these fields. The positions I’ve held include: Executive Director, Education Consultant, Education and Disabilities Manager, and Classroom Teacher. With the objective of enriching curriculum and furthering professional development programs, I supervised teachers and various school site directors, as well as facilitated individualized education plans and administered special education services. I’ve collaborated with social workers, program administrators and teachers, which provided me with great practice facilitating effective communication and opportunity for developing new systems and ways of evaluating progress.
Five years of my work was invested with diverse populations of children, teachers, and parents in San Francisco’s Chinatown where I helped low-income and special needs families. My study abroad of progressive education in Reggio Emilia, and Pistoia Italy, added to my work for the California Innovative Teacher Project, which strengthened my foundation in state of the art educational approaches. These experiences have complimented each other to help me arrive at a comprehensive understanding of child development and how to support early childhood programs.
I’m hopeful you will find my professional background, training and parenting experience of value, particularly as you seek someone to help you with your parenting challenges. Warm wishes to you as you seek family balance in lifestyle and parenting.
