Challenges of Today
Families benefit when they slow down and have time to connect with each other.
It sounds pretty obvious, doesn’t it? In recent years, powerful and pervasive changes in our lifestyles have had negative effects on children and families. Children have less free, unstructured time then ever for themselves and to spend with their family. They are being pushed academically and socially into being the perfect kids. Their lives are over scheduled. They spend less time outdoors connecting with nature and more time indoors connected to electronic technology. Instead of climbing trees, they’re playing Xbox and Nintendo. What’s the result? Children feel disconnected from the things that matter most.
Our children’s time is out of balance.
It’s not just our kids who are suffering, we well-intended parents drive ourselves crazy juggling our children’s after school activities, sports, dance classes, music lessons, clubs, and social events. As parents, we feel under pressure to give our children the best of everything, while at the same time hoping they’ll be the best at everything. Add in our home (housecleaning, shopping, cooking, scheduling, etc) and work obligations. We're juggling all of our kids’ activities in addition to our full time jobs in and out of the house. Raising a child feels more like a competitive race rather than a meaningful process, and all the while, we feel less and less connected to our kids.
Our time is out of balance.
A lack of connection with our children makes it harder for us to do our job as parents. If we don’t take time to lead them, they will not follow. They will look to their friends and technology to fill their needs, and their loyalty will no longer be with us. When we lose our natural power to guide our children we struggle with their negative behaviors and resort to discipline strategies that further sever our relationships.
